Snowshoe tours on the Gemmi

Shared tracks in the snow

Saturday – Underes Tatelishore
On Saturday morning, six of us met at 8:30 a.m. at the train station in Brig.
Led by Dominic Anthamatten, we set off together in the direction of Kandersteg. From there, we took the bus to the Kandersteg gondola lift, which took us up to Sunnbüel in comfort. From here, the actual ascent began. Our destination was the Underes Tatelishorn.
The way there initially led along well-groomed winter hiking trails. When we left these, however, it became more challenging. The ascent to the summit began in glorious weather.
Dominic led the group extremely professionally, catered to the individual abilities of each group member and gave valuable tips on technique and track organization. We felt safe and well accompanied at all times.

Once we reached the Unter Tatelishorn, we were rewarded with a wonderful view under a bright blue sky. We proudly enjoyed a well-earned break after the challenging ascent.
Due to the late hour, the way back proved to be a little more difficult in the sometimes difficult snow conditions. But thanks to Dominic’s tips, we also mastered this section as a team.
Shortly before nightfall, we reached the venerable Hotel Schwarenbach after a final short climb along well-prepared winter hiking trails. After around seven hours on our feet, a distance of around 10 kilometers and 1,000 meters in altitude, we ended the day proud and satisfied. We spent the evening in good company with good food and a glass of red wine, a good atmosphere and lots of funny stories. Of course, we didn’t want to miss out on a Genepi at the end. This was followed by a rather late night’s sleep in the dormitory.

Sunday – Lämmerenkummen
The next morning, we set off together on the tour towards Lämmernboden. We made our way through untouched snow, enjoyed the impressive natural surroundings and learned a few things about snow structure and avalanche risk along the way.
Above the Lämmernsee lake, we heard a dull bang twice, triggered by the snow and cavities in the snow. At that moment, I just thought: stay calm, carry on quickly and get back to solid ground.

From there, the trail led us on towards Gemmi. At the Gemmi Lodge, we were treated to a delicious Valais platter and a wonderful Heida – a perfect end to the tour. We were a really great group. Later, we took the train to Leukerbad and then the bus to Leuk, from where everyone made their way home.
Thank you very much – it was a great weekend: challenging, exhausting, motivating, instructive, sociable, cheerful and friendly. So good that we are already looking forward to the next one.
